East Midlands car hire information

There are 6 car hire providers at East Midlands airport located in the arrivals hall, with cars parked in the car rental car park near the Terminal. The airport is some distance from the nearest major town, so any meet and greet services may be more expensive.

However the six rental firms at the airport should, between them, be able to provide the vehicle type you require. Most operators provide everything from small, large and intermediate, to luxury vehicles and disable-adapted as standard. However, there is only one people carrier (7 or 9 passenger) renter on site, although the others may be able to arrange in advance. There are no on-site renters of minibuses or vans at East Midlands airport.

It does save time, and potentially cost though special offers, if you book your car in advance. It also gives you the opportunity to ensure optional extras such as child seats and satellite navigation can be provided if required.

However, if you do book in advance, do remember that you must bring your driver’s licence and ID with you (your passport is perfect) in order to take delivery of the car. If you do arrive at East midlands not having booked in advance, you can always arrange your car rental when you arrive at the rental desk. Some rental companies have a dedicated app you can use on your smartphone, while others are no more than a phone call away (be aware that all 08 numbers are charged at premium rates to mobiles in the UK).

You may also find an airport surcharge appended to your bill by the rental company. This is simply the fee the airport charge them, and they are passing in on to you, although you will find that some operators have included this is their rates.

Initially when driving away from East Midlands, you will find yourself on rural roads (speed limit 60mph). However, if you plan to visit one of the major cities nearby, the motorway driving limit is 70mph, and on the M1 near the airport, although there are 4 lanes, UK driving law demands you occupy the most-left lane you can to suit the driving conditions. You also must overtake on the right only.

It is a very good idea to familiarise yourself with the car before you set off, especially if you live in a country that drives on the right. Don’t be afraid to ask the rental representative any questions or queries you may have about using the car. Check it over before you leave and ensure you know where the main car controls are, especially if you intend to drive immediately in the motorway.
