By car - exit Junction 33 on the M4 and follow the A4232. Take the first exit off the A4232 at Culverhouse Cross and follow signs to the airport along the A4050 and A4226. From the North take the M5 down to Junction 15 and then take the M4 across the Severn Bridge, to Junction 33.

Cardiff, the capital of Wales, typifies the statement, ‘something for everyone’. Ranked by National Geographic as the six best alternative visitor destinations, it is Wales’ main commercial centre, seat of the Welsh Government and the base for Welsh national media, sporting and cultural bodies and BBC Drama. Cardiff Bay is said to be one of the best bay developments of recent decades in the UK. It would take almost a week to see an event a day in each of the sports stadia in the city. In its heyday, and driven by the export of coal, the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff was once the busiest and most important coal port in the world. The city centre has a rich mixture of retail, from national chains to small, independent traders in home-produced products, making it the sixth best in the UK for shopping, surpassing even Edinburgh and Leeds. Eating and drinking establishments appeal to all ages and tastes. Cardiff Castle remains a big tourist attraction, but the unique National History Museum at St Fagans (one of the many great museums in Cardiff) is a large open-air museum with dozens of buildings from throughout the history of Wales that have been moved to the site.

Airport facilities - Information desk, lost property (contact representative in baggage reclaim), Bureaux de Change, cash machines, baby changing facilities, Executive Lounge, disabled toilets, use of airport wheelchairs throughout Terminal building or passengers may retain own wheelchairs up until boarding, Ambulift for boarding aircraft. A range of shops including a newsagent, accessory shop, gift shop. The Food Village includes a range of snacks and hot and cold food. There is a burger restaurant and a bar.

Hotels - there are two on airport hotels, or you may prefer to drive to the city where you will find an unparalleled choice ranging from guest houses to luxury hotels.

There are five car hire providers inside the terminal at Cardiff airport, and cars can be collected from the dedicated car rental car park in the short-stay car park outside the terminal. Other providers may offer you a meet and greet service, but this work out more expensive.

Between the five providers, you should have no difficulty in booking the car you require, whether saloon, hatchback, small or large. Be aware that people carriers may not be available from all renters, so check in advance if you require one. While one of the rental companies provides vans, no minibuses are available to rent at the airport. Also, if you have young children, you will have to either specify your requirement for booster seats (required by law) or bring them with you form home.

Don’t forget to check over your vehicle before you leave the airport. Remember that the UK drives on the left, so if you reside in a right-driving country, you may have to devote a little time to familiarise yourself with the car controls so you know what exactly controls what – however, the rental representative will be more than happy to go through these with you if you are unsure. Also you might want to check if there is any prior damage from a previous renter, as the last thing you want at the end of your rental period is to have to pay or someone else’s damage!

Whether you save time by filling in your application form in advance, or complete it when you arrive at the rental desk, ensure you check that what you are signing for is on fact what you expect to pay (don’t forget your driving licence and another form of ID to secure your rental).

Sometimes you may find additional extras, such as an airport surcharge fee (the rental firms are only passing on what they are charged by the airport) or young persons’ daily rental surcharge added to your invoice. If you are unsure, check with your rental representative before you leave the airport.
